1. I have a red mark on the bony part of my bottom, what should I do?

You need to check and note the size, colour, site and time it takes for the mark to fade. If the red mark fades within 30 minutes and if it goes white when you press on it then it may be okay for you to continue getting up onto it. However you need to identify the cause of the mark. How old are your cushion and mattress? Have you changed your routine or equipment? Has your ability to relieve pressure changed? Are you unwell?

Please see the pressure ulcer prevention poster for more details and suggestions.

If the mark does not fade within 30 minutes and/or does not go white when you press on it then you need to keep all pressure off that mark e.g. go on bedrest. If you do not relieve pressure from a pressure mark it may develop into a pressure ulcer.

When the mark has completely gone then you should start applying pressure onto it slowly e.g. mobilising for a short period of time.

More details on building up your times after a mark or a sore and further information about what to do if you have a red mark can be found on the information sheet or you can contact Pressure Clinic (01722 429291)
