DUE TO SKIN DAMAGE
It is important that enough time is allowed for skin to build up pressure
tolerance over the area that has been damaged.
Therefore, to prevent further skin damage, it is recommended that time spent
in a wheelchair is initially limited.
NB - If you have had an open pressure sore, it is recommended that you wait for 3 to 4 days after it has healed before getting up.
The following is intended as a guide for initial re-mobilising:-
| DAY | STAGE | MOBILISING TIME |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | A | Up 1 hour |
| B | Back to bed for at least 2 hours | |
| C | Up 1½ hours | |
| D | Back to bed for the rest of the day | |
| 2 | E | Up 2 hours |
| F | Back to bed for at least 2 hours | |
| G | Up 2½ hours | |
| H | Back to bed for the rest of the day | |
| 3 | I | Up 3 hours |
| J | Back to bed for at least 2 hours | |
| K | Up 3½ hours | |
| L | Back to bed for the rest of the day | |
| 4 | M | Up 4 hours |
| N | Back to bed for at least 2 hours | |
| O | Up 4½ hours | |
| P | Back to bed for the rest of the day | |
| 5 | Q | Up 5 hours |
| R | Back to bed for the rest of the day | |
| S | Up 6 hours | |
| T | Back to bed for the rest of the day |
And so on
It is recommended that Stages A - T are followed consecutively whether
over 6 days or over a longer period (i.e. do not miss a stage).
It is vital that the skin is checked prior to getting up and immediately
on return to bed. If pressure marking occurs which does not fade within 20
minutes, relieve all pressure from this area until the mark has completely
disappeared, and when getting up again go back to the previous stage.
If a pressure mark involves at least 3 days of bed rest before it disappears, begin at Stage A, when starting to re-mobilise.
