Recreational Activities

We have 2 Recreational Assistants that have been employed since September 2013 they are a Job share and make up a full time post. They have been employed to promote and participate in social activities with patients. They do not work set days but are flexible around the patients needs. They organise events such as supper evenings, trips out to Rugby matches, Picnic’s and gardens and they love to go to Mudeford by the sea.

This is offered to all inpatients, either in groups or for individuals following paralysis due to spinal cord injury (SCI).

In the last 18 months we have :

  • been to watch football at Salisbury and Southampton play Liverpool.
  • been to Twickenham to watch England vs. Australia and England vs. Wales we won both times!
  • been to watch Japan beat South Africa in the Rugby Union World Cup.
  • been to Kew gardens, Avon Beach, Haynes motor museum, Salisbury Cathedral, Mary Rose Exhibition and Portsmouth Harbour.
  • been to build and carried lanterns at the Lantern Festival in Salisbury, We have sung carols at the carol service and darkness to light in the Cathedral, We have had cream teas, fish and chips and pizzas.
  • been crabbing at Mudeford with patients and their children.
  • enabled some patients to attend funerals of loved ones.
  • helped them celebrate birthdays and engagements and Weddings.
  • listened to many types of music at Salisbury Art centre
  • been out for curries and lunch’s in the New forest
  • been to Marwell zoo and been chased by meerkats.
  • been to riding for the disabled and to see what canine partners could offer our patients.
  • been racing and to watch Olympic class Sailing and out on the marvellous boat WetWheels.
  • helped with the events in Horatios garden.
  • been to Middle Wallop to the Museum of Army Flying and down to see the motor bikes on Poole key.
  • been for haircuts, new glasses, been shopping for new clothes, shoes and looked at cars.
  • shouted at the pantomime and cried at the pictures.
  • watched basketball and visited Stonehenge.
