AIM OF THE DAY

The day is designed to help referring teams to manage patients with spinal cord injuries prior to transfer to a specialist centre and it is hoped will also aid the development of links between the centre and referring hospitals.

The content of the study day is aimed at qualified nurses, doctors and therapists.

What the Day Covers

  • The service provided for those with a Spinal Cord Injury
  • The normal and altered anatomy and physiology associated with spinal cord injury, the aetiology and pathophysiology of a spinal cord lesion.
  • Explaining the immediate management and nursing care required to prevent further neurological deterioration and the prevention of secondary complications associated with an acute spinal cord injury.
  • The techniques used to ensure the safe moving and handling of the patient with an acute spinal cord injury.
  • An understanding of a patient’s perspective of rehabilitation following a spinal injury.
  • An outline of the physiotherapy and occupational therapy in the acute and rehabilitation management of the patient with a new spinal cord lesion.
  • The long term social impact of spinal cord injury on the patient and family.
