AIM OF THE DAY

To enable health care professionals to improve their knowledge and skills in the management of the needs of the patient with an acute spinal cord injury prior to transfer to a spinal cord injury centre.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of the study day the learner will be able to:-

  1. Describe the services provided by the Spinal Centre
  2. Describe briefly an historical account of the management of patients with a spinal cord injury and the development of the service provided today.
  3. Outline briefly, the normal and altered anatomy and physiology associated with spinal cord injury and the pathophysiology of a spinal cord lesion.
  4. Discuss the aetiology and the mechanism of injury resulting in a spinal cord lesion.
  5. Explain the immediate management and nursing care required to prevent further neurological deterioration and the prevention of secondary complications associated with an acute spinal cord injury.
  6. Identify safe techniques used in the moving, handling and repositioning of the patient with a potentially unstable spine in the acute phase of spinal cord injury management.
  7. Outline the long term social aspects of care for a patient with a spinal cord injury and their families.
  8. Express an understanding of rehabilitation following a spinal injury from a patient’s perspective.
  9. Outline the management of physiotherapy and occupational therapy in the acute and rehabilitation management of the patient with a new spinal cord lesion.
