AIM OF THE DAY
To enable health care professionals to improve their knowledge and skills to better meet the needs of the patient with an acute spinal cord injury prior to transfer to a spinal cord Injury centre (SCIC).
INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the study day the learner will be able to:-
- Describe briefly the service provided for those with a Spinal Cord Injury today.
- Outline briefly, the normal and altered anatomy and physiology associated with spinal cord injury, the aetiology and pathophysiology of a spinal cord lesion.
- Explain the immediate management and nursing care required to prevent further neurological deterioration and the prevention of secondary complications associated with an acute spinal cord injury.
- Describe the techniques used to ensure the safe moving and handling of the patient with an acute spinal cord injury
- Express an understanding of a a patients perspective of rehabilitation following a spinal injury.
- Outline the management of physiotherapy and occupational therapy in the acute and rehabilitation management of the patient with a new spinal cord lesion.
- Outline the long term social aspects of care for a patient with a spinal cord injury and their families.
